The Tapestry of Esoterica: Mystical Christianity
by Jonathan McGregor Bethel & David Colin Healy

Like most other religious traditions, Christianity is hindered by several schisms and is therefore comprised of multiple denominations. It is the tendency of any mystical message to splinter into divergent schools of thought and become diluted of any true meaning intended by an earlier holy man. This usually is the result of fear-ridden literalists with their own agenda attempting to cloud the true esoteric message with forced interpretations of the actual scripture. Many times in the past, literalists have created a framework for their dogma thinking that this is God’s way, but more often than not they veered from the true path that the mystic was trying to show.

In spite of these attempts at shrouding the truth, the actual esoteric message of Yeshua can still be apprehended from both the literal scripture passed down to us and also from the Gnostic scriptures that were found in Nag Hammadi, Egypt in 1945. It was very advantageous that these early codices were found; for it brought to attention the essential wisdom that Yeshua Christos preached, and they helped finish the story of the mystery that he was unfolding. To become enlightened individuals, it takes a studious dedication and conscious effort to piece together the forgotten shards of truth that Yeshua brought to mankind, for the Roman church, manipulated by political aspirations, malevolently tried to obscure the secrets from later generations. In spite of this, the true words of the Yeshua can unveil the divine sanctuary of your own being in alignment with the Godhead through the archetype of the individual Christos.

Over the years, orthodoxy has fabricated a patriarchal hierarchy of feigned power over the congregation, and it established only one teaching, or set of teachings, as the gospel fact. It is interesting to note that the Protestant Church opposes the Roman Catholic Church to a strong degree, yet they take the Holy Bible, an edited work from Nicaea, as the literal word of God. The complete word of the Christos must be considered for the message to be truly imparted, wouldn’t you think?

In the Naassene Sermon, purportedly an actual sermon of Yeshua, he teaches the congregation about the “Immanence of God:” that God dwells inside of each and every one of us. These are words that take power away from the Roman Church, so it would be in their best interest to remove them.  The pagan Emperor, Constantine did just that at the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD.

A noteworthy amount of words and books were thrown out of the canonical scriptures that they were piecing together at the time. Many Gnostic sects were indeed very heretical and were perversions of Yeshua’s message, and the council was correct in removing some of these works.  It is thought that Gnosticism and Esoteric Christianity came from established Christianity, but the fact remains it was the more esoteric form of Christianity that came first, and the literalists, in their quest for control, dogmatized its true meaning. It was the church Father’s zeal to create a congruent and official New Testament, but in so doing, they threw out the baby with the bath water, so to speak. Many of these apocryphal books shed light upon the life of Jesus and the disciples, and they need much more research and scrutiny.

One such codex found at Nag Hammadi was the Gospel of St. Thomas. In it Yeshua again teaches of the divine inside of each and every one of us, “The Kingdom of Heaven is inside you.” In the same book, it is also shown how Mary Magdalene was the “Disciple of the Disciples.” Again, the Roman Church couldn’t have a female in such a powerful position; that would usurp their power in a direction that was the anti-thesis of their aims.

Out of these fragmentary glimpses of Yeshua’s message, one can infer the inner truth given to mankind and not be in subjection to a word manipulated by Roman rule. It is up to us to cleave the truth from the chaos of ignorant postulates and know the true meaning of esoteric Christianity. Once gnosis begins to filter into the awareness of all of mankind, we will be better able to ascertain the truth that has always been hidden but is now coming to fruition as an impending global awakening begins to occur.  Until then we should endeavor to awaken to the oppresive establishment and become informed, enlightened Individuals who lead by example.  In so doing, we will emulate the pattern of behavior that the Christos came to instill, and we will then live more in a society of harmony and bring the Kingdom of Heaven to Earth!!!
