One of the greatest tools of self discovery is the
practice of mindfulness. Mindfulness is the discipline of becoming
aware of our thoughts and feelings as they occur. When we practice
mindfulness, we do so from a detached, nonjudgmental perspective.
We simply observe how we show up in the world without making ourselves “wrong” or “bad” when
we witness ways of being that no longer work for us. Mindfulness
gives us the opportunity to step outside ourselves and ask the questions:
What pushes my buttons and rocks me off balance? Am I thinking my
thoughts or are they thinking me? What thoughts and feelings are
running me? Am I swept up in painful emotional drama? What ways of
being no longer serve me?
It is not uncommon for people at some stage on their spiritual
path to feel like part of life is “spiritual” and part of
life is “worldly.” Unlike meditation, breathwork and
other disciplines, mindfulness is done in the moment in our daily
lives. Mindfulness is about living our spirituality fully in the
world and provides a unique access to personal power.
Simply creating awareness of the things that are running us allows
us the opportunity to create new and empowering experiences. If
we observe ourselves reacting in anger, we know that we have the
ability to respond with love. |
Mindfulness, at
its most basic level, gives us the conscious power to create our
reality. In each and every moment, have the opportunity to choose
how we experience life, and that opportunity begins with pure awareness
of the choices available to us. In that awareness, we can choose
to live from habitual reactive patterns, or use our discernment
to respond with new possibilities.
At a deeper level, mindfulness gives us access to our true nature
as spiritual beings. By watching our thoughts and feelings, we
begin to de-identify with them. Many human beings are completely
identified with their thoughts and emotions, and that is their
only experience of life. Through mindfulness, we step beyond our
thoughts and emotions. We create a space between ourselves and
what we are thinking and feeling. In that space, we begin to experience
the magnificence of who we really are – spiritual beings living
a human experience.
