Often gems relating to
love are pink or red in color, as are the Rose Quartz, and Rhodochrosite
featured in my last column. However, in spring, as green returns
to the northern hemisphere, we are reminded again of romantic love
and its power. As you know, the heart chakra is associated with both
pink and green. Having already discussed examples of pink gems, we
will this time, in honor of the greening of the season, cover a few
green stones that benefit love and the heart.
A beautiful transition stone, with its combination of pink core and
green rind, is the Watermelon Tourmaline. The dual colors provide
stimulation and energizing of the heart chakra aiding the connection
between the physical and subtle bodies. It helps us to lighten up
and recognize the humor in a situation, supporting understanding,
love, friendship and patience. Watermelon Tourmaline can be worn
on the body, placed on meridians, or used in a gem essence.
All colors of Tourmaline (which include yellow, brown, black, grey,
red, pink, blue, green, and colorless) are known to be powerful healing
gems that activate and direct energy. Geological traits that help
us comprehend this are clearly visible in the raw Tourmaline crystal.
Tourmaline is formed magmatically into pillar-shaped crystals with
a triangular inner structure. The triangular formation is recognizable
in slices of Tourmaline crystal. This trigonal shape is very stable,
reflecting Tourmaline’s influence toward balancing emotions,
providing inner security, and helping us clearly focus intentions.
Tourmaline crystals look like long needles bundled into rods, this
formation aids the flow of energy through the crystal. Molecularly
this arrangement is called a ring silicate. The combination of the
stable triangle and the long, directive crystal bundles contribute
to Tourmaline’s piezoelectric effect: the crystal will emit
an electric field, and even a faint light when put under pressure.
Emeralds are historically associated with spring, love, and domestic
bliss. Emeralds are in the beryl family (which includes Aquamarine
and Morganite) and like Tourmalines, its molecules form into ring
silicates.
Emeralds, however, have
a hexagonal crystal arrangement, which gives a direct, balanced,
and efficient movement to its influences. Emerald will open and activate
the heart chakra, while calming the emotions and bringing harmony.
In other words, Emeralds can enhance friendship, love and unity,
and aid in mutual understanding and cooperation.
For those of us who meditate on, or visualize the healing of our
Earth, becoming familiar with the unique green of an Emerald is very
beneficial. There is no other gem, or source for this particular
healing shade. Look deeply into the emerald, tune into its frequency
and it’s color will imprint on your consciousness. You will
be able to recall it, at will, when meditating. Mentally bathing
the Earth, or anyone else that needs healing attention, with this
green glow is both a powerful and soothing activity. Emeralds can
be worn, or laid on the body, used in meditation, and as an essence.
For contrast, I chose Bloodstone (also known as Heliotrope) for our
final heart related stone. Bloodstone is formed by sedimentary actions,
which gives it influence over issues relating to the environment
that shaped us emotionally, and the physical diseases that arise
from conflict and avoidance of these issues. Bloodstone consists
of a base of green chalcedony (quartz) in which grains of quartz
oxides, hematite and other iron oxides are mixed. The resulting stone
is a deep milky green with red and yellow spots, a bridge between
the quartz and jasper families. Bloodstone is used for centering
the heart chakra, and for grounding the energy of the physical heart.
Bloodstone is classified as an oxide, and contains many iron components.
The action of oxygen and iron in the blood and circulatory system
is vital for strength, mental acuity, endurance, and subsequently
will power. When all these elements are taken in combination the
effect of Bloodstone is toward the revitalization of love, relationships,
and friendships. It helps to strengthen contemplation, meditation,
and the ability to express love. Bloodstone is best used by wearing
it on the body.
