Spiritual Breakthrough, a Taoist Perspective
By Master Yun Xiang Tseng
The pronoun “I” can be written with solid lines, like the yang lines of I Ching tri-grams. Next to it you can write “I”, again, but with the lines of the letter broken, like the yin lines in a tri-gram. The solid-line of “I” represents Self/Reality/Illusion, according to Taoism, reality. The non-solid “i,” the disappearing “i”, represents Selflessness, beyond this reality, the real truth.
How did you make your concept of “I” and why do you behave the way you behave? Since the day you were born you have been forming a character, a collection of ideas and descriptions others know as you, or your “I”. However this is an illusion that you must break to reclaim your spiritual freedom!
You become a victim when you indulge your ego because you will feel you must defend against any insult to your ego. Some people know they are victims, and don’t want to change because they are afraid they won’t recognize themselves! However if you do not want to be a victim you must change your old patterns by giving up the need to be recognized in this way.
People are critical because they are lacking love and compassion for their true self. You must love yourself in order to love others. If you do, then love to the other has value. We become polluted throughout our life by finding things to entertain us, to distract us from knowing our true spiritual self and from spending time loving our self. External cures do not cure the cause of disease. The cure is in your own heart. You locked your heart and only you can find the key to unlock it by opening your heart to loving yourself completely.
You may be afraid to unlock your heart, because you think “What if I took my mask off? People won’t like me, I won’t like me?” Fear of the fear creates layers of fear. Understand that if you invest your thinking in this illusion of “I”, then you become a fragile target, easily hurt. Your fear of letting go of your ego keeps you from experiencing and loving your true spiritual self and also from honestly loving others.
Everything associated with the solid “I” must go, so therefore do not create boundaries between yourself and others, or feed your ego. Let go of the idea of controlling others or being controlled by others. Let go of the need for pity because craving and receiving pity feeds the ego.
If you are afraid to love, or to be loved, then nothing goes well. Come out of that fear and you will live! To defeat fear and break the illusion, there must be loss in order to create gain. Lose your need to know and control all, and the need to create fear, then you will gain love for your true self.
The idea of the Taoist Mirror is that if you say you are bad, it is reflected back to you. The universe is the mirror of the Tao. You will hear something three times, 1) as you say or think it, 2) as the universe hears it, and 3) as the universe returns the thought reflecting it back to you. Returning is the motion of the Tao.
Stop judging yourself so you do not become a victim of your own thoughts! If we believe we are happy, we act in such a way that eventually we will BE happy. If you speak in the Tao, you must project Taoist thoughts. If you speak in fear mode, you create fear response. Fear returns because we invite him in. You create your own tomb or your own heaven. Between happy and sad is one thought.
Things you see and hear, are actually from the past. In the future, others will see your light, or hear your transmissions. In actuality you live in a three dimensional world including Past, Present, and Future but see them each as separate because the transmission between them is processed differently.
The practice of T’ai Chi and Qi Gong is the key in your freedom. It strengthens your jing (essence) and qi (energy) in order to transmute jing to qi then qi to shen (spiritual consciousness) and shen to the void. This is an important process for Taoist spiritual breakthrough and physical longevity. When the jing and qi are very strong, you will see that things are going well in your life. When you feel jing and qi drop, you will feel things are not going well. Create your path by letting go of the things that rob you of your energy, or keep you from practicing to strengthen it!
Seek the spiritual, but understand that there are material needs: to have a home, or money or to take a class. Material exists in the realm of the Spiritual and Spiritual in the Material. Like the black dot in the white side of the Yin Yang symbol, you are both sides. Enjoy every moment, consciously, as you exist on this middle earth. Have a great attitude when you go to sleep to have happy dreams, and, watch your dreams carefully, to see if the being representing you really has your face. Remember that non-attachment is the best attachment. Give up your old identity. Break the illusion to create your freedom!
