| As we come into this season of giving
and helping the “less fortunate”, my mind comes to think
about how we should help others. What are we doing to others when we
help them? Catherine Ponder in her small but marvelous book OPEN YOUR
MIND TO RECEIVE, gives us a marvelous affirmation: “I do not depend
upon persons or conditions for my good. God is the source of my supply
and God provides his own channels of good to me now.” If God is
the source for everyone, why do I need to be the source of the “less
fortunate”. I know that cats have small frontal lobes in their
brain and even though I am the smartest cat in the universe, I still
need help on this one. We see pan handlers out at intersections begging
so you would think there was a lot of poverty and many people need help
until you find that these panhandlers make about $200.00 to $300.00 per
day just standing there with their hand out. Seeing the same person month
after month with a sign that says “stranded, help me get home” lets
me know that it’s too lucrative for him to go home. How about Hosea’s “feed
the homeless” projects where they feed literally tens of
thousands in the stadium? It’s obvious that they are the people
who live around there because the streets would lined with them trying
to find a place to sleep at night if they were really homeless. “Herb
ole buddy”, you might say, “Just how cold and calloused can
a cat get”? I haven’t said you did anything wrong if you
give to these people. I haven’t said you shouldn’t. |
However, I do want you to know the facts. The fact is that the person
that is begging that you sacrifice your movie money to so that they
can have something to eat today makes more money than you do and it’s
all cash, tax free. You work hard for your money and file your taxes
and do what you think is right and just want all people to have a good
life, don’t you? Congratulations! Me too! Now let’s decide
what to do. Even if you give to Good Will or The Salvation Army, you
can’t be sure that you are not helping a dead beat. What to do?
What to do? Well, ole Herb says that he likes to give his “no
longer needed stuff” to Good Will, Salvation Army, or any place
that “SELLS” it cheap not only to the “less fortunate”,
but to anyone that walks in. That way they are paying for their stuff
even if it is ridiculously cheap. They are flowing the energy, which
helps them bring more to themselves! This season as you help others,
try to help those you know who will eventually get back up and also
help others, not the panhandlers on the street who will always be panhandlers.
