It seems that a good
many of the articles this month have the underlying theme of prosperity
and gratitude. This seems very appropriate with our National Pig
Out Holiday, Thanksgiving occurring at the end of the month.
I believe that our country, in general, enjoys the most prosperous
lifestyles of all. Even some welfare housing comes equipped with
cable for T.V. Of course this brings me to the point that we are
a consumer driven economy. Advertisers want to get at everyone
in order to sell their products. But is that all? What subliminal
messages do we receive while watching “the tube”?
Forget the subliminals! The obvious message is one of violence,
disrespect, illicit sex, crime, and glorification of criminals.
That’s just the commercials. The programming is so raw and
violent that I have almost completely ceased watching television.
I don’t have cable and have never had it, so I may just not
know what I’m missing, but I have seen it at friends and
relatives homes. Here is what I think that I’m missing: People
calling each other stupid, maybe not in those words, but some close
facsimile thereof, young girls selling their sexuality to talk
the public into buying everything from toothpaste to automobiles,
bloody violent re-enactments of crimes, rampant disrespect of youth
for their elders, and sporting events.
How about it, this year on Thanksgiving Day, enjoy your loved ones.
Unplug the tube. Get out the Scrabble game if the conversation
gets a serious lull. If it’s a nice day, go for a walk together.
Give thanks for the opportunity to really live rather than live
in fiction, vicariously through the tube.
Let’s give thanks for our loved ones, friends, family, pets,
home, lifestyle, and all the bounty that the Universe has brought
our way. The best way to show our gratitude is to give loving attention
to those people, pets, and things in our lives.
I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you for supporting
our magazine, for giving us the chance to fill your mind with good
news, and mind-expanding information. Thank you readers and contributing
writers. Again Thank You!
