Healing with Sound
Interview with Dr Lois Grant by Sherry Henderson
SH: According to my understanding of Bible history, we are told that God spoke the world into existence. Do you have information on the use of sound or tone to create?
LG: One of sound therapists’ favorite verses of the Bible is from the Gospel of John: “In the beginning was the Word.” This is a poetic way of saying that the Creator spoke the Universe into being with waves of sound. Researchers believe that sound and its effects created the Universe and everything in it and it is sound that keeps it going.
The ancient references to the “music of the spheres” can also be interpreted as referring to the essential influence of sound as the creative force of the Universe. In the 6th century B.C. in Greece Pythagoras was the first to hear the Music of the Spheres. He believed that the stars were attached to crystal spheres revolving about the Earth and that these heavenly spheres, eternally revolving, produce harmonious sounds only the truly inspired can hear. Pythagoras had a school that taught not only the magic of numbers, but also the healing powers of music.
SH: Could you give our readers a little background on the origins of sound therapy?
LG: Priests and shamans in all cultures have used chanting and toning to invoke Spirit and to heal the sick for centuries. Tibetan bowls, chimes, bells, flutes, tuning forks and many more instruments have provided comfort, inspiration and positive effects on the body. Producing complex vocal sounds with overtones is an art form which can have a healing effect on the body.
Music has always been a source of entertainment and self-expression, as well as a way of manipulating emotion. Drumming is one of the most basic applications of sound. It can whip people into a frenzy and assist them with very high-level spiritual experiences, as well as give them courage for hunting or battle.
SH: What exactly does sound therapy do to heal?
LG: The various tissues and organs in the body each resonate to a unique set of sounds. When dysfunction occurs, these sounds are disrupted. Sound therapy provides the specific frequencies to support the body and allow normal function to return. A great deal of work has gone into determining which sounds (code) affect which tissues. Each code consists of five frequencies, called a “commutation.” I am finding that the sound therapy also assists with emotional healing. We are all being pushed to heal our emotional wounds, to process them and release them. I am fond of saying, “We can’t take our third-dimensional garbage to the Fifth Dimension.”
Dis-ease is due to stuck emotional energies. Sound waves can help bring up the emotions so they can be processed and moved out. It is important for people to realize that it is safe.
SH: How did you become interested in sound therapy?
LG: I have always loved studying, performing, teaching and listening to music and I have always loved science. In 2003 I attended Gregg Braden’s “Living in the Mind of God” workshop. He showed the work of Hans Jenny who developed the science of Cymatics. (The Greek word “Kyma” means “wave.”) When I heard that sound-generating machines based on Dr. Jenny’s work were available, I ordered one. My primary purpose was to further normalize the leftover effects of my rheumatoid arthritis. It has turned out to be so much more than that.
In addition, my hearing is extremely acute. Although it is a fantastic gift, I have to carry earplugs everywhere I go! Just recently I realized that finally I have come home to work. To be using music and science to help people feel better is the most exciting thing I can think of.
SH: Are there any conditions that are not helped by sound?
LG: Sound waves are not used in any situation where something could be “knocked loose.” For example, we never touch a pregnant woman or someone with cancer. We avoid working directly on implants. Clients who persist in blocking their energy are not as likely to benefit from sound therapy as those who allow their energy to flow.
SH: What do you see in the future for the uses of sound?
LG: It will increase as people recognize its non-invasive nature and its power to enhance their lives. There are no side effects. If the body does not need the sound, it has no effect. When sound is being absorbed on one side of the body, no sound can be felt on the other side. When the condition returns to normal, the tone on the applicator changes significantly and the sound waves can be felt on the other side.
Much work has already been done on creating a special sound wave generating machine just for horses. Racehorses have been returned to the track following injury with amazing results, in far less time than with traditional treatment, and with better results and no scar tissue! Sound therapy in sports medicine is just beginning to be explored.
