Few people have the courage and stamina
to do what John Zaffis has done, repeatedly: confront the forces of
evil. Zaffis is a world-renowned paranormal investigator and demonologist. For
the past 32 years, he has consulted on a number of cases that clearly
demonstrate that dark forces most assuredly do exist.
John was raised in the Roman Catholic faith, but “I’m fascinated
by many different religions,” he says. “ I’ve studied
them and I respect them. I never judge others based on their religious
beliefs or convictions.” He is a firm believer in a Divine Higher
Power, which he calls God, and, conversely, he also believes in the Power of
Darkness and its minions. He admits to having always been a very analytical
individual with a thirst for knowledge. “When I go on investigations,
I look at all the evidence before I make any judgments or draw any conclusions. Certainly,
not all hauntings are caused by demonic forces.”
John has participated in a number of high profile cases, one of which was recently
chronicled in a television documentary called A Haunting in Connecticut. “This
was a classic case of demonic infestation,” John relates. “The
family moved into a house that had formerly been a funeral home and before
long, all hell broke loose!” “I came face-to-face with a demon
in that house,”
John admits. “It frightened me so badly that I left for three days,
but I did return.” Family members, investigators and a priest finally
conducted the Catholic Rites of Exorcism and the demonic entities departed
from the residence.
John is not only convinced that demonic possession is real but, has witnessed
it. “Don’t get me wrong, the devil doesn’t just ‘pop
up,’ complete with horns and hooves, but I have been involved in cases
where I have been certain that a person is either severely oppressed or possessed
by a demon.”
He says he’s done this type of work long enough to be able to quickly
assess the signs of possession. “If the person has heard voices
speaking to them, have been suffering from sleeping and eating disorders, have
grown withdrawn and disassociated themselves from those around them, these are
classic signs of possession.”

Those who are possessed will also often
speak in a language that no one can understand and their voice is often “layered,” sounding
like several voices speaking at once. “I’ve seen objects
levitate and fly around a room. I’ve felt entire houses shake
and quiver. Demonic entities can be very powerful,” Zaffis
warns.Ninety percent of all entity infestations or possessions can be
directly linked to “opening a door to the supernatural” though
the use of ouija boards, the casting of spells or other such practices. “Those
who do not understand the paranormal should leave it alone” he
cautions. “They leave themselves
wide open for trouble.”
Infestations and exorcisms are very risky because the negative entities often
create confusion, conflict and havoc attacking investigators and members of the
clergy who are trying to expunge them. “During investigations, I have
seen members of the team begin to fight among themselves. I’ve witnessed
drastic personality changes and some team members have suffered vast changes in
their own sleeping and eating habits. This can all be attributed to the influence
of the entities.”
“I remain extremely guarded,” John reports. “Infestation
and possession affects everyone present, not just the afflicted.’
For my own safety, I limit my stays to a maximum of two or three days.”
His most complex case involved an astonishing 15 exorcisms! Multiple entities
possessed a 5’2”, 80-pound woman, who became powerfully strong and
terrifying when the entities manifested themselves. During the exorcisms,
the woman, who was literally tied down, emitted demonic voices and completely
ravaged researchers and clergy who were present. The room in which the exorcisms
took place frequently became icy cold and, often, a very unpleasant stench permeated
the air. Finally, after four long and arduous years, the demons left the woman
and never possessed her again, although she reported that they did “lurk
around” her for at least ten years after they were exorcised.
John admits that he worries about how his own life may be impacted by doing this
type of work. Then why does he continue to do it? “I feel a genuine
need to help others, to share the knowledge and experience that I have gained,”
he says. John never charges for his services, although, he admits he will
gratefully accept reimbursements for his travel expenses. “Gas prices
are outrageous!” he said, with a laugh.
