Spiritual Etiquette in the World
Who in Their Right Mind?
By Suzanne Matthiessen

Sometimes I think the whole world has gone totally bonkers. Or at least a large part of it has, when you consider the stories in the “mainstream” news.
Who in their right mind would lie about reasons for going to war, or be cavalier about prisoner abuse or urinate on the holy book of another religion? Who in their right mind would plow down the Amazon rainforest, destroy the financial futures of their employees, or design violent video games? Who in their right mind would molest young children, decapitate their pregnant wife, or not admit that their product causes addiction and cancer?
You’d probably agree with me that all of those behaviors are deplorable, and that surely, no one in their right mind would do any of them. Some are indeed the result of mental illness, and others are consciously chosen crimes against humanity that fall into the category of personality disorders, all of which whose numbers are on are sharp incline.
But there are also the smaller-scale infractions that go on between people, the ones that are not as blatantly dark, but damaging nonetheless in terms of effect. Behaviors that even people who consider themselves “spiritual” display, unaware that in terms of energy, are actions made from un-owned inner shadows that unless acknowledged and cleared, are like lead boots on their journey to awakened states of existence.
Here are a few examples I’ve discussed before in this column but deem revisiting:
• People who give the impression they are “evolved,” but you can’t count on them whatsoever. They don’t return phone calls, they are always late, they make promises but don’t follow through, they talk big but are full of hot air.
• Healers or spiritual teachers that are completely full of themselves and their healing abilities or level of philosophical understanding, and who treat people around them badly. They tend to abuse their power, lack humility and have a sense of entitlement, thereby completely negating their self-perceived level of consciousness. Personally, I’m not impressed.
• Over-zealous personal growth seminar graduates who want to recruit everyone they know, and use manipulative tactics in their attempts. More often than not, they are very self-oriented and disrespectful of others who don’t want to sign up, and lay trips on you using their cult language and point of view.
• A “love and light” person who espouses New Age jargon to give them a faux-aura of awakened consciousness, but actually exhibits higher-self undermining
behaviors—for instance, is passive-aggressive, maliciously gossips, is demeaning to who they consider “beneath them” and/or is not trustworthy in the least.
None of these examples are about me being judgmental; they are just discerning observations of realities, naked emperors and elephants in the room everyone is trying to ignore in the guise on being “spiritual.” Please note that it’s not about the person; it’s about the behavior.
By “right mind” I’m not talking in terms of polarities, but of a mind completely aligned with Source, which by definition is non-dual, not separate, and not based in ego, or driven by the inner shadows of the small self.
Pathway to the Gods No one in their right, Source-aligned mind would harm or disrespect others or the planet that gives them a home. But we live in times of Koyaanisqatsi, a Hopi term for a world out of balance. The masses are heavily influenced by corrupt political systems and corporations, with messages and images delivered by a commercial media machine that has ties to both. People see celebrities get away with murder, CEOs getting a hand slap for illegal activities and/or ruining the financial futures of their employees, and politicians spin-doctoring their way into positions of ever-greater control, and figure if those guys are getting away with it, then why can’t they?
