Not only are our rights and resources being stripped from us with
little more than a whimper, we can’t seem to bestir ourselves
to do anything about it.
So many people are willing to give control of their lives to someone
else. The pharmaceutical companies’ and allopathic physicians’ wealth
are a testimony to that fact. Is it apathy, or do we really not
believe in our own selves?
I receive hundreds of e-mails a month from concerned citizens who
really are trying to stop the freight train of "big government"
from running over us rough shod, but most people don’t even
know what’s happening. They are like the children in "The
Pied Piper" who follow, as though in a trance, whatever the "powers
that be" suggest to us.
I’m still not sure if people don’t care or simply fail
to stay informed. The results are the same. More and bigger government
is presented and no one seems to even blink an eye.
For example, our offices and store are located in a little "burb"
called Sandy Springs. A while back, a movement was started to incorporate
the little "burb" into a city. It has met with favor
with almost everyone that I have discussed it with. "So,
what’s so bad about incorporating?" I’m asked.
"We’ll
have our own police department, fire department, and sanitation
services. not only that, but we can finally do something about
all those homeless people." What my friend fails to realize
is the price tag on these amenities. We already pay Fulton County
taxes. Do you believe for one minute that Fulton County will give
us a discount because we now have to pay Sandy Springs City taxes?
The creation of additional government control is to be avoided
like the plague. Do my friends think that we will be given home
rule or is it just the easiest way to avoid taking personal responsibility?
The city will haul off our trash, keep our streets safe and run
the homeless outside of its boundries.
Let's think about the long term ramifications of all of our
inaction, whether it’s to allow another government bureaucracy
to invade our lives, or fail to take responsibility for ourselves
and our neighborhood, can’t we just come out of our trance
and participate in our world?
