Indigo Dreams

Review by Sandra Hill
I am a single mother with an energetic, 7yr old busy-body. I have tried different methods to help my daughter redirect her energy into a more positive direction. I was introduced to Indigo Dreams, a 60 minute CD/audio book that not only entertains children but also introduces them to stress management and relaxation techniques. The CD includes wonderful children’s stories that affirm self-esteem and self-awareness and help decrease stress and anxiety.
My daughter was initially unreceptive when I attempted to play the CD for her, however I realized I was doing it at the wrong time of day. The CD was competing with her television shows. She has her television schedule memorized, and even when she was enjoying the CD, she was constantly aware that her favorite program was due to come on. I repeated our introduction to meditation at bedtime with exciting results.
I tucked my little one in and sat at the edge of her bed while the CD played. Soothing music and sound of crickets were all we heard. She yelled out “Ooh crickets!” and remained quiet, with a smile on her face throughout the introduction of the CD. Next the sounds of someone breathing and the rain hitting the pavement made my mind wander about peacefully, only coming back to reality upon noticing how peaceful my daughter looked as she stared into space while listening to the music.
The first story, “The Affirmation Web”, benefited my daughter the most. Most of the complaints from her teacher stem from her becoming angry and acting out. Her anger grew from her lack of confidence in her ability to do her schoolwork and her feeling that she was disappointing her teacher and me. Although I regularly complimented her on her schoolwork, hearing the turtle, butterfly, snake, and spider say “I am beautiful, I am healthy, I am smart, I am gentle and kind” is the extra push she needed. She repeated the verses after the animals and they really stayed with
Indigo Dreams CD coverher. The narrator, Lori Lite’s voice and intonation match the tone of the story in perfect harmony. She speaks slowly enough for the child to visualize the picture as the story unfolds, and her words are clear and concise. The story rhymes succeed in capturing the attention of my daughter as she listened intently. Once again there is soothing music playing in the background to aid the child in remaining peaceful. This story involved her more by asking her to repeat the affirmations after each animal. She confirmed my feeling that she enjoyed this story the most by asking to repeat the story before the CD could continue on to the other stories.
The remaining stories illustrate relaxing and meditation techniques. “The Boy and a Bear” is the best one to listen to when the child needs to go to sleep immediately. Ms. Lite, invites the child to pretend to be either the boy or the bear and she takes them through a step by step inner countdown of going to sleep. The child enjoys breathing and relaxing as the boy and the bear on the CD fall asleep peacefully.
“A Boy and a Turtle” is the most relaxing story on the CD
